Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has urged his old club to appoint Michael Carrick as the next permanent manager of Manchester United.
Carrick is currently serving in a caretaker role at the Premier League club until the end of the season, with the team expected to appoint a full-time manager ahead of the next campaign.
Rooney, who spent several successful years playing alongside Carrick at Old Trafford, said he strongly believes his former teammate has what it takes to lead the club on a permanent basis.
Speaking after Manchester United’s 3–1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, Rooney expressed confidence in Carrick’s leadership qualities and understanding of the club.
The former England captain said Carrick’s personality and character make him well suited for the role, noting that he has known the midfielder closely during their time together at the club.
Rooney also pointed to Carrick’s impressive record during his time in charge, stating that the caretaker manager currently holds one of the best winning percentages.
“100 percent Carrick should get the Manchester United job,” Rooney said. “I have said this before. I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick.”
He added: “I know him very well. I know his character and personality. For me, he has to get the job.”
