The Kaduna State Government has begun allocating new plots of land to residents of Malali Low-Cost whose homes were demolished during the administration of former governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The compensation initiative was carried out through the Kaduna Geographic Information Service (KADGIS), with its Director General, Dr Bashir Garba Ibrahim, presenting land titles to affected beneficiaries.

Dr Ibrahim said the move fulfils Governor Uba Sani’s pledge to provide justice and relief to residents impacted by the demolition exercise carried out by the previous administration.

He explained that the allocation of plots followed a stakeholders’ meeting held on January 21, where discussions centred on investigating the circumstances surrounding the demolition and finding a lasting solution for affected residents.

During the presentation, the KADGIS chief urged beneficiaries to develop their plots without delay, stressing the importance of using the opportunity to secure stable housing.

He also cautioned against selling the allocated land, noting that the government’s intention is to support beneficiaries in becoming homeowners and contributing to the state’s development.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the chairman of the former Malali Low-Cost residents, Alhaji Mohammed Auwal, expressed appreciation to the state government for addressing their long-standing concerns.

He recalled that residents had endured a nine-year struggle seeking compensation and commended both Governor Sani and KADGIS for their roles in facilitating the land allocations.

Other affected residents also praised the governor’s approach, describing his leadership as compassionate and responsive to the needs of the people.

The demolition saga dates back to October 2020, when the Kaduna State Development and Property Company issued a seven-day quit notice to residents. Although initial protests led to a temporary suspension, a subsequent three-day notice in March 2021 resulted in the demolition of more than 80 structures.
