Veteran Nigerian Actor Abiodun Ayoyinka Opens Up on Struggles After Fame as Papa Ajasco
Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka has revealed that life has not been easy despite the widespread fame he gained for playing the iconic character Papa Ajasco.
Ayoyinka made the revelation during an interview with media personality Lucky Udu, where he spoke candidly about the challenges he has faced since becoming widely known for his role in the popular Nigerian comedy series Papa Ajasco & Company.
According to the actor, the major challenge stems from the legal ownership of the character Papa Ajasco, which is registered by the production company owned by veteran media entrepreneur Wale Adenuga.
Ayoyinka explained that because the character is trademarked, he cannot freely use the name, costume, or identity associated with Papa Ajasco outside the official production without seeking permission.
“The major problem is that particular character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Anybody that wants to use me outside wants me with the character, with everything that I have, but it has never been easy for me,” he said.
The actor further noted that many companies and brands often want him to appear in advertisements or campaigns as Papa Ajasco, but he is unable to accept such offers because he does not have the rights to the character.
“I don’t have the right. I can’t use the name Papa Ajasco unless I go and take permission. I can’t even use the costume,” Ayoyinka added.
He also explained that the strong public association with the character has made it difficult for him to secure opportunities under his real identity.
“Because that character is very strong, they want to see me as Papa, dress like Papa, look like Papa. It is always difficult for me to do it,” he said.
Ayoyinka also disclosed that aside from his acting career, he previously worked with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture before retiring about five years ago.
Despite his long career in the entertainment industry and the popularity he gained through the role, the actor said life has been challenging in recent years, highlighting the lesser-known struggles many performers face behind the spotlight.
