Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has opened up on his decision to represent Nigeria at international level instead of Germany, citing his strong personal and family ties to the country.
In an interview with SportyTV, the 26-year-old shot-stopper explained that his upbringing played a key role in shaping his identity and eventual choice of national team.
Okoye, who currently plays in Italy’s Serie A, described his time at his club as a fulfilling phase of his career. Now in his third season, he said he feels settled and is enjoying his football.
The goalkeeper also expressed appreciation for the consistent support he has received from Nigerian fans throughout his journey, despite spending most of his club career in Europe.
He noted that the encouragement dates back to his early playing days in Germany, through his time in the Netherlands, and now in Italy, adding that the backing from home has been a major source of motivation.
Looking ahead, Okoye said he remains focused on personal development and helping his club achieve the best possible finish this season.
He stressed his determination to keep improving as a professional athlete while contributing positively to his team’s success.
Reflecting further on his decision to represent Nigeria, Okoye credited his father’s influence and his cultural upbringing for maintaining a strong connection to his roots.
He added that he is proud of his Nigerian heritage, which ultimately guided his choice to play for the Super Eagles.
