Former Seattle Sounders forward Herculez Gomez has urged Inter Miami CF owner Jorge Mas to strengthen the squad, insisting that captain Lionel Messi needs more support.
Gomez made the remarks following Inter Miami’s elimination from the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Wednesday, a result that has raised fresh concerns about the team’s overall balance and competitiveness.
Despite Messi finding the net, Inter Miami were held to a 1-1 draw by Nashville SC in the second leg of their Round of 16 clash.
The result was not enough to secure progression, as Nashville SC advanced to the next round on the away goals rule, ending Inter Miami’s campaign in the competition.
Reacting to the outcome, Gomez criticised the team’s defensive structure, describing it as fragile and lacking both pace and stability.
In a post shared on X, he suggested that the club should prioritise improving its current squad rather than focusing on ambitious future competitions.
Gomez also referenced comments by Jorge Mas about targeting the Copa Libertadores, urging the club to first establish itself in regional tournaments before aiming higher.
He concluded by stressing that while Messi continues to deliver on the pitch, the team must provide stronger support around him to compete effectively.
