Ashleigh Plumptre has criticised the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the decision to postpone the upcoming edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Nigeria women’s national football team defender expressed frustration over the lack of clear communication and the impact the postponement could have on players and teams preparing for the tournament.
Plumptre said the uncertainty surrounding the competition makes planning difficult for players who rely on international tournaments to showcase their abilities and maintain competitive rhythm.
CAF recently announced that the continental tournament, originally scheduled to take place this year, would be moved to a later date. The decision has sparked reactions across African women’s football, with many players and stakeholders questioning the timing of the announcement.
The former Leicester City Women defender noted that players dedicate months of preparation for major tournaments, and sudden changes can disrupt training plans, club commitments, and national team preparations.
She also highlighted the broader implications for women’s football development in Africa, stressing that consistent scheduling and proper organisation are essential for the growth of the women’s game on the continent.
Despite the disappointment, Plumptre reaffirmed her commitment to representing Nigeria whenever the competition eventually takes place, adding that the Super Falcons remain determined to compete for continental honours.
The Super Falcons are the most successful team in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and were expected to challenge strongly again in the next edition of the tournament.
