Euracare Hospital has denied allegations of medical negligence following the death of the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege.

In a statement released by the hospital, the management expressed condolences to the Adichie family while rejecting claims that its medical staff were responsible for the child’s death.

The hospital said the toddler, who had been referred to the facility after receiving treatment at two paediatric centres, was already critically ill when he arrived for further diagnostic procedures.

According to the statement, the medical team immediately provided care in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards.

“Despite our best efforts and the collaborative work with external medical teams recommended by the family, the patient sadly passed away less than 24 hours after presenting at our facility,” the hospital stated.

The management described Euracare as a reputable centre for complex medical care, noting that its clinical team comprises internationally trained and experienced medical professionals.

It also said sedation was administered only where clinically indicated and that all necessary medical support was provided during the course of the child’s treatment.

The hospital acknowledged the deep grief of the family and extended its sympathies, stating that the loss of a child is “beyond words.”

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Chimamanda Adichie and family on the demise of their son and acknowledge the profound and unimaginable loss they are experiencing during this deeply distressing time,” the statement read.

Euracare also noted that some reports circulating about the incident contain inaccuracies, adding that it remains committed to transparency and cooperation with all clinical and regulatory processes.

To address the controversy surrounding the case, the hospital announced that it has launched a detailed internal investigation in line with government regulations and medical best practices.

The development comes after Adichie and her husband issued a legal notice accusing the hospital and some of its medical personnel of negligence and breach of duty of care in connection with their son’s death.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many observers awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
