Former Denmark international Peter Schmeichel has predicted that Manchester United could finish second in the Premier League ahead of their city rivals Manchester City.
Schmeichel made the remark following United’s 3–1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, a result that boosted the Red Devils’ hopes of climbing further up the league table.
In the match, Casemiro opened the scoring for United with a header, but Villa responded when Ross Barkley found the net with a volley. However, goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško secured all three points for the hosts.
The victory moved Manchester United to 54 points, leaving them seven points behind Manchester City and 16 adrift of league leaders Arsenal.
Despite acknowledging that Arsenal appear out of reach in the title race, Schmeichel believes United still have a realistic chance of overtaking City to claim second place.
Speaking to Viaplay, the former goalkeeper said United’s recent run of results could help them close the gap on their rivals.
“I’m looking and I’m serious, I think we can catch Man City. I think we can do that,” Schmeichel said, adding that United’s current winning form is stronger than that of the defending champions.
His comments come as the Premier League season enters its decisive stage, with several clubs battling for top positions in the table.
