A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has suggested that a strong opposition alliance led by Atiku Abubakar and a prominent southern politician could unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Momodu made the remark while speaking during an appearance on Sunday Politics, a programme aired on Channels Television. According to him, a coalition ticket involving Atiku and a well-known political figure from southern Nigeria could significantly weaken the ruling party’s chances in the next presidential race.

He pointed to possible alliances involving figures such as Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi, noting that such a combination could attract wide support across the country. Momodu argued that a united opposition could pose a major challenge to the current administration.

“I am convinced that if we have a partnership with Atiku, possibly with Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi, or any other credible person from the South, Tinubu will be finished politically,” Momodu said during the interview.

The media entrepreneur also described Atiku as a seasoned politician whose long-standing presidential ambition and political experience could make him a strong contender if he emerges as the opposition’s candidate in the next election.

Momodu added that some individuals who previously opposed Atiku are now beginning to see him differently in the evolving political landscape. According to him, alliances often shift in politics as groups unite to challenge a common opponent.

Drawing a comparison with politics in the United States, he referenced the political trajectory of Donald Trump, noting that critics once questioned Trump’s age before he returned to power, demonstrating that political comebacks are possible.

He further stressed the importance of a vibrant opposition in a democratic system, arguing that competitive elections strengthen governance and ensure that leaders remain accountable to the electorate.
