The Benue State Government has reported a rise in suspected cases of Lassa fever, while noting that no new deaths have been recorded in the past 11 days.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Paul Ogwuche, disclosed this during a media briefing, stating that suspected infections have increased to 383, with 47 cases confirmed so far.

Despite the rise in suspected cases, the total number of fatalities linked to the outbreak remains at 14. The commissioner added that only six new cases were confirmed within the last 11 days, suggesting a decline in the rate of new infections.

According to health authorities, 20 patients are currently receiving treatment in isolation centres. Of these, 14 are being managed at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, while six others are at the Federal Medical Centre Makurdi.

Ogwuche attributed the recent improvement to intensified public awareness campaigns, early detection of cases, and collaboration with key health partners, including the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the World Health Organization.

He explained that surveillance efforts have been expanded across all 23 local government areas in the state, with health workers receiving continuous training on infection prevention and control measures. These efforts, he said, have helped reduce transmission rates and protect frontline medical staff.

The commissioner also highlighted the importance of early reporting and treatment, noting that patients who present symptoms early have better recovery outcomes. Surveillance teams are actively tracking contacts of confirmed cases, ensuring prompt testing and isolation when necessary.

Authorities say the improved response has contributed to the drop in mortality, as more cases are now being identified and treated at earlier stages within communities.
