Bashir Ahmed, a former media aide to late President Muhammadu Buhari, has expressed concern over the growing trend of granting pardons to bandits in Nigeria, warning that some are exploiting the process to escape justice.

His comments followed a deadly attack in Katsina State, where suspected bandits reportedly killed members of a local vigilante group after a confrontation.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, in Falale village, located in Jibia Local Government Area. According to reports, the vigilante group was on patrol when it intercepted and neutralised three suspected bandits.

In what authorities believe was a retaliatory assault, armed bandits later stormed the community, killing at least 15 people. The attack has raised fresh concerns about the effectiveness of current strategies to address insecurity in the region.

Reacting to the development on social media platform X, Ahmed described the situation as troubling, suggesting that some individuals claiming to have renounced banditry may not be sincere.

He argued that the latest killings highlight the risks of offering amnesty without stringent verification measures, noting that such policies could be manipulated by criminal elements.

Ahmed said the incident reinforces fears that certain bandits feign repentance as a strategy to avoid prosecution, only to return to violent activities.

The attack in Katsina adds to ongoing security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria, where authorities continue to grapple with banditry and rural violence.
