Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged opposition leaders to close ranks and work together after former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, Obi described Kwankwaso’s move as a notable step in the broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system and reposition the opposition.

He revealed that he travelled to Kano on Monday at the invitation of Kwankwaso, whom he referred to as an elder brother. The visit, he noted, coincided with the former governor’s decision to join the ADC.

Obi stressed the importance of unity among opposition parties and concerned citizens, calling on them to put aside political, ethnic, and religious differences in order to address the country’s pressing challenges.

He added that the focus should shift from divisive politics to values such as competence, integrity, and commitment to national development, emphasizing that the goal extends beyond winning elections to rebuilding institutions and restoring public trust in governance.
