A fresh attack on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State have been reportedly carried out by Suspected armed herders leaving two residents injured in the latest incident.
The community had previously suffered a major assault on June 13, 2025, during which more than 200 people were killed, forcing many survivors to flee into Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
A local leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers entered the area on Sunday afternoon with their cattle and encountered soldiers deployed to protect the community. According to him, security personnel attempted to intercept the group as they grazed toward Yelewata town.
He explained that the situation escalated when the herders, upon noticing the presence of soldiers, began to retreat. While troops reportedly fired warning shots to halt them, the attackers allegedly responded with gunfire while withdrawing from the area.
Two residents were injured in the exchange, including a woman who sustained a gunshot wound to her hand and another individual shot in the leg. Both victims were quickly attended to and later evacuated by the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) to Makurdi for further treatment.
The community leader expressed concern over the recurring attacks, noting that the latest incident occurred just days after the state government distributed improved agricultural inputs to farmers. He warned that the renewed insecurity could disrupt farming activities and limit access to farmlands during the season of planting.
