Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed optimism that Nigeria’s security challenges will soon be brought under control, assuring citizens that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to restore peace nationwide.

Shettima made the statement on Tuesday in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, during a ceremony marking the defection of Governor Dauda Lawal and his supporters to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Vice President received the governor into the ruling party on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He emphasised the administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that ongoing strategies are aimed at addressing insecurity across the country. Shettima also called for unity and continued support for the current leadership.

According to him, Lawal’s move to the APC would strengthen collaborative efforts among political leaders to tackle security challenges, particularly in states heavily affected by violence.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who represented Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the event, said lawmakers elected on the APC platform were fully supportive of the governor’s decision. He added that closer cooperation among governors would enhance development and improve security outcomes.

Barau noted that while insecurity is not limited to Zamfara State, it can be effectively addressed through coordinated leadership and collective action.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas described the defection as a major political shift, stating that it signals a new chapter for Zamfara State. He urged residents to rally behind the governor to achieve meaningful progress.

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma also welcomed the development, describing it as beneficial to both the state and the APC. He assured that APC governors would support Lawal in delivering more development projects.

Similarly, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda said Zamfara had fully aligned with the ruling party. He commended the governor’s performance, particularly in infrastructure, and formally presented him with the party’s flag.

In his remarks, Governor Lawal expressed gratitude to key political figures, including former governors and current Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, as well as Senator Abdulazeez Yari, for their support. He pledged to work with past leaders and remain committed to the progress and development of Zamfara State.
