The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abia State, Don Norman Obinna, has warned that low membership registration among supporters in the South-East could weaken Peter Obi’s chances of securing the party’s presidential ticket.

Obinna made the remark on Saturday in Umuahia while speaking as a special guest at the inauguration of executive members of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) in Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South local government areas.

He urged party members and supporters of the former Labour Party presidential candidate to actively participate in the ongoing online membership registration, stressing that success in the party’s primary election would depend largely on numerical strength.

According to him, current registration figures show a significant disparity between regions. He noted that Abia State has recorded about 400,000 registered members, while Adamawa State is approaching one million registrants.

Obinna questioned the readiness of Obi’s supporters to translate their backing into measurable political participation, emphasizing that winning the primary election would require strong voter turnout within the party.

“It is not just about wanting Peter Obi to be president; the key issue is how to make it happen,” he said, adding that the present figures raise concerns about the South-East’s preparedness.

The ADC chairman called on members of COPDEM and the party to intensify grassroots mobilization, promote awareness of the registration process, and advocate for good governance and credible leadership.

Also speaking at the event, COPDEM Chairman in Abia State, Prince Solomon, alongside a House of Representatives aspirant for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Ogbonna Abarikwu, urged Nigerians to reject poor leadership and support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic values.
