Russia has expressed strong support for Cuba amid rising tensions with the United States, warning against what it described as external interference in the island nation’s internal affairs.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Moscow said it was concerned about the growing pressure on Cuba in recent months. The Russian government accused outside forces of deliberately escalating confrontation and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting both the Cuban leadership and its people.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry condemned what it called attempts to intimidate a sovereign state through unilateral sanctions and political pressure. It argued that Cuba’s current economic and social challenges are largely the result of the long-standing US embargo, which has affected trade, finance, and the country’s energy sector.
The Kremlin also voiced confidence in Cuba’s resilience, saying the country would defend its right to determine its own political and economic future despite what it described as external threats.
The statement comes as tensions between Havana and United States continue to rise. Washington has maintained diplomatic and economic pressure on Cuba, which it designated a state sponsor of terrorism in 2021.
According to reports, the administration of Donald Trump has indicated that progress in negotiations with Cuba may depend on the departure of President Miguel Díaz-Canel. The Cuban leader, who took office in 2018, is widely regarded as a hardline figure and currently has two years remaining in his term.
US officials have called for political and economic reforms in Cuba, including the release of political prisoners, as conditions for easing sanctions. Some detainees were reportedly released recently following mediation efforts by the Vatican.
Despite these challenges, Cuban authorities have insisted on maintaining sovereignty and resisting external pressure, as geopolitical tensions around the Caribbean nation continue to intensify.
